The castle is a two-winged building with a hipped roof. Two protruding plastered half-timbered floors are set up on a massive ground floor. The so-called Knights' Hall is located on the north side of the north wing. In the wood-paneled room there are several portraits of well-known European rulers such as Charlemagne, Frederick I Barbarossa, Julius Caesar and a painting by the Ottoman Sultan Suleyman I

The castle was originally built in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the actually four-wing complex was converted into a double-winged classical country palace.

During the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle burned down almost completely.

The castle fell apart more and more in the 20th century until in 1991 the municipality of Köngen decided to buy and renovate the castle. From 1995 to 2007 the exterior facade and the interiors were fundamentally repaired. Since then, the majority of the interior has been used for commercial purposes, the castle cellar, the castle chapel and the knight's hall have been open to the public.
