After the opening in 1909, Germany's first motorized aircraft flew here, including the monoplane by Hans Grade. After WWI until 1923 civil aviation, then relocated to the newly built Tempelhof Airport. A variety of test facilities for aircraft construction were built in Johannisthal. After WW2 until 1952 the airfield was used by the Red Army. Final cessation of flight operations in 1995.

Today the site is a landscape park.

The former airfield presents itself as an extraordinary ensemble of nature reserve, circular hiking trail and active park as well as attraction for nature lovers and history buffs.

Once airplanes were constructed in Johannisthal - in the early 20th century, this was the European center for "aviation", as aviation was once called. Ernst Grade, Melli Beese, Anthony Fokker, the Wright brothers and other pioneers of the time designed and tested innovative aircraft. After civil aviation was relocated to Tempelhof in 1923, in the Third Reich Johannisthal became primarily important as a war-relevant workshop. Following this, the area was used militarily until the 1980s.

      From military to recreational base

Today, one hardly notices the landscape park of its past. There are no more planes landing - instead, the flight and ground personnel consist of butterflies, bees, plants and many other species of flora and fauna worthy of protection.

      Varied park design

Surrounded by stone walls, around 26 hectares of the former airfield form the nature reserve, the core of the park. Around the nature reserve leads a partially elevated trail. It provides a view of the green terrain and informs with the help of information boards about the history of the place and the flora and fauna, about "botanical immigrants" such as the Russian dog chamomile. The landscape park is also one of the three most important inner-city lark breeding areas in Berlin, which was one of the reasons for the reservation as a nature reserve. Around the nature reserve are grouped about 30 "city chambers" - they form the active park. Here are numerous green areas for sports, games and leisure available, u. a. a skating rink, a beach volleyball field as well as play and sunbathing areas. Naturalistic chambers are used for relaxation and discovery of nature.

Good to know: The airfield Johannisthal was opened in September 1909 as the first entrepreneurial run airfield and as a second engine airfield in Germany. Now grass is growing over it ...
