The Charcas de Erjos in the highlands in the northwest of the island, halfway between the communities of Los Silos and El Tanque, are the most important wetlands on the island of Tenerife. This unique landscape was created as a result of the extraction of fertile land in coastal areas.
These extractions, which took place between the 1950s and 1960s, created the basins in which the ponds have now settled.
