In 1929, the millennium bridge got its name, when the new bridge was inaugurated on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the city.
The Lange Brücke was the first direct connection between the Old and the New Town. The first wooden bridge construction was built around 1230/1240 and had to be renewed several times. The "Millennium Bridge" should also have symbolic significance. It was intended to help people from the two districts get closer and, through better understanding, to promote the unification of the entire city. The old and the new time should meet through the new bridge construction.
In 1945, the Millennium Bridge was blown up and rebuilt in 1946/47. In July 1993, the bridge had to be closed again for safety reasons for vehicles. In 1995/96 the demolition and the rebuilding of the millennium bridge took place.
The sophisticated bridge was inaugurated on 4 December 1996.

“The millennium bridge got its name in 1929 when the new bridge was inaugurated to mark the city's 1000th anniversary. To give the former Long Bridge the necessary height, the main street had to be filled in and the houses in this part of the street had to be demolished.
The Long Bridge was the first direct connection between the old and the new town. The first wooden bridge structure was built around 1230/1240 and had to be renewed several times. In addition to the Long Bridge, in the middle of the Havel, from the middle of the 14th century to the spring of 1700 there was a double-storey half-timbered building on wooden piles that had been renovated several times. This was connected to the bridge by a short footbridge.
The bridge was completely rebuilt in 1860. A wooden bascule bridge was built. In 1892, however, this was replaced by an iron structure. The middle section was a drawbridge, which over the years became an increasing obstacle to traffic in urban development and was then blocked and broken off in 1928. In the same year, a reinforced concrete bridge with three fields was built. The new bridge was inaugurated on September 7, 1929 and was given the name "Millennium Bridge".
The "millennium bridge" should also have symbolic meaning. It should help that the people from both parts of the city get closer and promote better unification of the whole city through better understanding. The old and the new times should meet through the new bridge construction.
In 1945 the millennium bridge was blown up and rebuilt in 1946/47. In July 1993 the bridge had to be closed again for vehicles for safety reasons. 1995/96 saw the demolition and construction of the Millennium Bridge.
The sophisticated bridge was inaugurated on December 4th, 1996. "
