In the 12th and early 13th centuries, the cathedral island was divided into a margravial and an episcopal area. While the cathedral stands on episcopal property, St. Peter's Church marks the margrave's sphere of influence. It is considered to be the successor building to the late Slavic and margravial castle chapel, in which the last Slav prince Pribislaw-Heinrich is said to have found his grave.
