The parish church of St. Gotthardt is a Gothic hall church made of brick
and one of the outstanding buildings of the old town. In 1140 Pribislav had a stone church built for the Premonstratensian monks in the settlement of Parduin, which later became the old town.
The stone church was demolished down to the lower part of the west gable at the beginning of the 15th century and replaced by the current late Gothic three-aisled hall church. The bar tower in the west and the north-east corner of the transept have been preserved to this day. The west facade cites Hildesheim Cathedral, whose west wing was erected by Hildesheim Bishop Godehard.
Master builder Henrik Reinstorp completed today's late Gothic hall ambulatory with additions in the years 1456/57. The nave of the stepped hall was covered in 1473, the south-west extension in 1475. In 1623 the cloth makers' guild donated the sandstone pulpit. It is considered the most beautiful pulpit of all Brandenburg churches. The tower of the church was redesigned in 1767 in the baroque form with a top and dome.
With its mighty arched window and diverse interior, the St. Gotthardtkirche is one of the most impressive sacred buildings in the Mark Brandenburg. The facade reveals three ages. The west portal still looks Romanesque, while the nave is Gothic and the tower is Baroque.
The Gothic hall church made of brick has rich furnishings: bronze baptismal font, triumphal cross group, unicorn carpet, cloth makers' pulpit, epitaphs (since 1549), figurative stained glass windows, galleries and organ (from 1736-37).
A thorough restoration took place in 1904-1906. After an organ fire in 1972, the interior was painted according to Renaissance findings. The exterior was restored in 1990/93.
Guided tours and tower ascents are possible by prior arrangement.
