A real eye-catcher is the ghost cave in Rechtenstein, directly on the Danube in Upper Swabia.
The Geisterhöhle, or Rechtensteiner Cave, is an open gap in the rock face along the picturesque Danube. By the way, the castle of Rechtenstein is also interesting, or what is left of it. In the cave you can only take pictures with a flash, it is really dark. Without a photo, a flashlight or a smartphone with the appropriate app is an advantage.
The Ghost Cave & Danube BathThe water has created a cave here, which has an opening to the south, so to the Danube. The cave can be reached via a staircase that already has a few steps. If you get overheated, you can lie down in the shade of the trees on the other side. Since there is very little traffic, it is also quiet, mostly accompanied only by the lapping of the Danube. In the summer several bicycles go by, because we are here directly on the Danube cycling trail Oberschwabens. In the cave you can even go back a few feet, but the four courses are getting smaller and you would have to push through quite a bit, which is better not risked.
There are also stalactite walls in the ghost cave, where the weather has raged violently, so that one hardly recognizes it. Remains of animals were found in the cave, but none of Stone Age people. However, they found a coin and shards from the time of the Roman occupation. Why this cave is called Ghost Cave can only be appreciated, but I suppose that the superstitious people in the Middle Ages connected this place with spirits, it is dark and looks very mysterious, even today an attraction, as it was then.
Opening hours and address of the Ghost CaveThe cave is only open from April to October to protect the bats. In winter, it is a retreat for these animals. 89611 Rechtenstein
