St. Dionys' Church, Esslingen am Neckar
The St. Dionys' Church with its two distinctive towers on Esslingen's market square dates back to the 14th century. An excavation museum was built under the church in the 1960s, showing the wall foundations of the first churches on this site. Settlement and church buildings have been documented since 777.
The church dates back to the 14th century. The special thing about this old church are the two distinctive towers, which are connected by a cross passage. This was necessary because one of the towers leaned after it was built. The cross passage also had a practical use, as it connected the watchman's apartment in the south tower with the granary in the north tower.
In 1604, a Protestant high altar was set up in the choir of the church. What is special is that the time of high altars was actually already over at the beginning of the 17th century. Biblical motifs painted by Peter Riedlinger can be seen on the altar. The altar can be understood as the city of Esslingen's commitment to Lutheran teachings.
The city church is also special because there is an excavation museum underground. After the Second World War, the remains of the first churches were discovered underground during construction work.
To this day, the city church is not just an attraction for tourists. Above all, it is a place of lived faith, where many people gather for worship or personal devotion.
The early Gothic city church is open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The viewer is presented with a space of art history significance in which faith experience and spirituality can still be felt today. Liturgical readings take place Monday to Friday at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. On Sundays, there is a service at 10.30 a.m. Text / Source: Esslinger Stadtmarketing & Tourismus GmbH, Marktplatz 16, Esslingen am Neckar

The Protestant town church of St. Dionys in Esslingen is a church from the 14th century - the Gothic period. It is impressive from the inside out and worth a visit. St. Dionys stands south of the market square and, together with the Catholic St. Paul Minster and the Frauenkirche, forms a building ensemble that shapes the cityscape.

The town church of St. Dionys on Esslinger market square dates from the 14th century.
Particularly striking are the two striking towers, which are connected to a cross-passage. This was necessary for static reasons, since a tower has tilted after its construction.
