Höjerup Church was built by a skipper in distress, he vowed that he would build the chapel if he were saved. The church stands on the 30 m high bluff and was consecrated in 1357.

The sea has undermined the steep bank. In 1928 the choir collapsed. The rest of the church was underpinned. The last service was in 1910. You can stand in the church and look out over the sea through a door.

On March 16, 1928, at five o'clock in the morning, a landslide happened near Højerup. This had happened both before and after, but that fall was so extraordinary because it brought down the choir of the old church of Højerup.

By 1600, the cliffs had begun to eat into the churchyard - with the macabre result of coffins and skeletons sticking out of the shore. In 1910, the church ceased to be used, but another 18 years were to pass before fate caught up with the construction.

The old church of Højerup - the church on the edge

The history of the church goes back to the 13th century. At that time it was said that “the church moves a little bit inland every Christmas night”. But nature caught up with the church. The sea gradually washed away the soft chalk at the bottom of the cliff, and in 1910 the congregation left the church because it became too dangerous. A new church was built further from the cliff in 1913 and is a beautiful limestone building next to the tourist restaurant in Højerup.

In a major cliff demolition in 1928, the church choir and part of the cemetery fell into the sea. The church was then secured against further demolition. Where the choir used to be there is now a viewing terrace where you can literally stand on the edge of the cliff and enjoy a spectacular view of the Baltic Sea and the world heritage. The church is adorned with fantastic frescoes. You can find out more about the church and the frescoes on the Selskabet Højeruplund local history association website.

Although the church no longer officially functions as a church, it is very popular as a wedding venue. Every year around 150 civil weddings take place in the church, many of them with foreign couples who want a special experience.
