It was founded around 1182 by Gerard, Count van Loon and in 1217 it became the first women's abbey of the Cistercian Order in the Netherlands. From 1470, the buildings are repeatedly ravaged by marauding soldiers. The gatehouse dates from 1531 and the courtyard clearly typifies the agricultural character of the abbey, as does the tithe barn dating from 1657.
The former abbey church burned down in 1826, after which the remaining walls were demolished. In 1795, the abbey was abolished by the French government and the domain came into private ownership: the buildings were given an industrial purpose, such as wool spinning mill, distillery, etc.

The gatehouse dates from 1531. It formed the main link between the abbey and the world. At the time, it was the only building that communicated with the outside world.

The porter was responsible for the reception of the guests, shelter for the pilgrims and distribution of bread to the poor. The building was also an important economic pivot where contracts and leases were concluded with visitors who were not allowed to enter the abbey.

The gatehouse met all requirements perfectly and is still today the symbolic reference point of the abbey to its surroundings. Now the building is used for exhibitions, lectures and receptions.

Nice destination. An overview map with the signposted hiking routes around the abbey hangs in the gatehouse.
