For centuries, a historically significant trade route, the "Golden Road" from Nuremberg to Prague, ran here near Bärnau. This connection was severed in May 1945. The "Iron Curtain", the dividing line between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, emerged. Only after the fall of the Wall in the East was the historic Bärnau–Paulusbrunn border crossing reopened on May 26, 1991, after 46 years of separation, initially for pedestrians, and later also for road traffic.
