Spioenkop van Wenduine
Spioenkop is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places by the sea.
Its location 31 meters above sea level provides unique panoramic views.
The dune with pavilion owes its name to the victory of the Boers over the English in the Battle of the South African War of Independence in 1900, at Spioenkop in Natal, South Africa.
This dune (popularly called “Betten Hull” (“hull” = dune) has been used several times as a strategic observation post since 1770. Military messages were passed on from here via signal masts and later semaphore masts (predecessor of telegraphy). Belgian customs placed In the 19th century, a guardhouse was built on the high dune: an excellent place to observe the coast and to prevent goods from being unloaded or loaded clandestinely. When emerging tourism gained a foothold in Wenduine at the beginning of the 20th century, many some infrastructure works were carried out. In 1902, a first dune pavilion with a thatched roof was built, which is still one of the most famous tourist attractions. Sheltered from the wind, tourists can enjoy a wide panorama. During the two world wars, the building was completely destroyed twice The current pavilion with a concrete red roof dates from 1955.
