The first constructions of the castle were probably built in the 11th century by the Counts of Katlenburg. Over the centuries it has been constantly expanded and rebuilt. The function of the Stauffenburg was to protect the Harz mining in nearby Gittelde as well as to secure the Thuringian military road, which ran below the Seesen castle from southeast along the Harz to Nordhausen.
In 1778 the facility began to fall into disrepair. The stones were used, among other things, to build the domain below the castle.

There are still some remains of the walls of the Stauffenburg here. There is an explanation of the castle, a rest pavilion, benches for breaks, with one bench on the castle wall offering a magnificent view.

The ascent to the castle ruins is worth it. The castle was last used as an official prison in 1778 and later fell into disrepair. The stones were removed to build other buildings. Now the castle hill is a wooded place. A great view of the foreland! Benches invite you to linger and take a break.
