Very striking monument on the Hübichenstein, loved by Goethe

The Hübichenstein, a steep double limestone rock, rises around 50 meters into the air. The steep limestone rock is located near the federal highway 242. Two outcrops are connected with each other and give the stone its unique appearance. The Hübichenstein was once part of a coral reef from the Devonian period.
In honor of Kaiser Wilhelm I, an oversized bronze eagle with a wingspan of around three meters was erected on the top of the highest rock in 1897.
According to the legends, the dwelling of the dwarf king Hübich is located under the rock, who was very appreciated because of his helpful and friendly nature, because he supported the needy. However, climbing the Hübichenstein led to punishment by the dwarf. The reign of the dwarf king should last as long as the big rock is taller than the small one. The smaller rock that can be walked on today is said to have been larger than the one with the eagle. During the Thirty Years' War, the Emperor's soldiers probably shot down the top of the then larger Hübichenstein with their cannons. The kindhearted dwarf king has not been seen since. harz-travel.de/Regionales/Harz-Sehenswuerdständigen-Highlights/Huebichenstein
