Settlement and artificial forest Teutoburgia in Herne

On the outskirts of Herne is the settlement Teutoburgia, which is considered one of the most beautiful miners settlements in the Ruhr area. It was built at around the same time as the Teutoburgia I / II colliery between 1909 and 1923. The colliery began in 1911 with coal mining, but was shut down in 1925 due to unprofitability again.

The settlement Teutoburgia is aligned with the Baarestrasse as an axis to the entrance to the colliery. In arches, quiet side streets branch off from it. The settlement is largely completed and structurally - as the Margarethenhöhe also - based on the garden city concept of Ebenezer Howard. Most houses are semi-detached or terraced houses. Despite their architectural similarity, they are visually distinct from each other and form a very varied townscape. Each unit has its own garden. The front gardens are mostly open with only a few hedges and fences. In the 1990s, the entire settlement in the course of the International Building Exhibition IBA Emscher Park was extensively renovated and renovated. The following pictures show, without comment, a short walk through the settlement:

In the north one encounters the walk on the striking conveyor frame of the colliery. It is preserved as a monument and forms a landmark in a small park, the artificial forest Teutoburgia.

At the entrance welcomes a 12 m high steel sculpture in the form of a pedestrian with densely vegetated trellis by Monika Günther and Manfred Walz. The Protegohaube over shaft II was likewise integrated into the park like the winding tower, which is visible at night by its illumination also from further distance. It is even visible from the nearby A42 motorway.

On the southern edge of the Landschaftspark Bladenhorst, in the immediate vicinity of one of the most beautiful preserved workers' settlements in the Ruhr area, a wooded area of art is dedicated: here, the KunstWald Teutoburgia invites you for a walk. The sound artist Christof Schläger had founded a support association at the end of the eighties, whose ideas were taken up by the Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet in 1993 with a competition and put into action.
