There is a legend that Roland was a highly revered knight of the emperor Charlemagne. After he died in a battle in the Pyrenees around 778, he became a hero of medieval legends thanks to the Roland's song by Konrad the priest.

It has been standing on Wedel’s market square for over 500 years as a symbol of fairness.
