The Peterstein (465 m above sea level) is located between Wernigerode and Elbingerode above the Zillierbachtalsperre. The Peterstein is a good place to relax while looking over the dam.
In earlier times, the Zillierbach supplied many mills up to Halberstadt, where it changed its name to Holtemme. However, it was responsible for many floods in Wernigerode, especially in the spring after the snow had melted. So it was decided in 1931 to build a dam at this point for flood protection and drinking water supply.
