It is not known when the large cross stone was placed on Alte Rehauer Straße. The reason why the stone was erected is also not clear. According to tradition, the stone is interpreted as an atonement cross for a murder. It is more likely, however, that this was a boundary marker for a former church property of the Waldsassen monastery or the Hof Hospital Foundation.

According to legend, two miller's boys from Reichenbach once visited the parish dance in Fohrenreuth. There they both saw the same girl and vied for her favor. Drunk they made their way home late at night - each for himself. Here at this point on the Pfaffenberg they lay in wait and hit each other until both sank dead to the ground.

The gravedigger Bon Schoenwald was not allowed to bury the two murderers in the consecrated ground of the cemetery and buried them next to the avenue of the church in the forest. He marked this point with 2 small cross stones.

To commemorate the murder, however, the large cross stone was erected here, which admonishes those passing by to take a silent Our Father in memory of the blood act.
