The old customs house in Herrnburg is the oldest residential building still standing in the Mecklenburg border town to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

It was built as a chapel on the country road to Schwerin. The current building was built in 1783 on the foundations of the previous chapel as a two-storey half-timbered building next to the Herrnburg village church, initially as a chapel. Not only were the bricks of the previous building in monastery format reused, but also a terracotta by the Lübeck sculptor Statius von Düren from around 1550 was installed along the long side facing the street. The location on the important old pilgrimage route to Wilsnack and the location of the property in an inner curve of the street emphasize the customs house in the townscape. Herrnburg is separated from Lübeck only by the moat of the Lübeck Landwehr as the geographical border. On the Lübeck side, a barrier was checked on the Brandenbaum.

The roof structure projecting over the building has been emphasized in the gable area in a particularly extravagant way since the 1930s by trophies from big game from Africa.

After the building was renovated in the mid-1990s, it was used as a gallery until 2012.

From 2013 to 2019 the old customs house was inhabited by a violin maker and used as a workshop. Until the move to the new workshop (in the Herrnburg pastorate), historical string instruments and bows were built there.
