The project to build a new large canal, launched in 1961 and declared a public utility in 1978, gives rise to significant opposition in the town and surrounding areas, under the impetus of environmental movements and conservationists. . The Valdieu site was particularly concerned because its geographical location required the construction of a new lock downstream of the village. In 1997, this project was definitively abandoned by decision of the Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
The village now lives to the rhythm of boating and sports and leisure activities developed along the canal, including the bike path on the old towpath. This track is an integral part of the EuroVelo 6 cycle route linking Saint-Nazaire to Constanţa.
