The Recker Moor is a 3.45 km² nature reserve north-east of Recke in the Langenacker area. Together with the Mettinger Moor, it forms the nature reserve "Mettinger and Reckermoor" (426 ha). It is one of the best preserved moor areas in North Rhine-Westphalia, a remnant of the former "Vinter Moores", about 50 km² in size, which developed into a bog (Hochmoor) about 5000 years ago. Peat mining, drainage and agricultural use led to the complete disappearance of the up to 3 m deep bog before the Recker part was put under nature protection in 1971. The immediately adjacent Mettinger Moor followed in 1986.
In the Reckermoor there is still the original bog vegetation, where the peat growth has begun again, while the Mettinger Moor mostly consists of moistened meadows and moorbirch forest. The area offers a habitat for a variety of plant and bird species, including many threatened species such as Krickente, Bekassine, Uferschnepfe, Großer Brachvogel, ... Amongst the nine native peat moss species, the extremely rare soft peat moss (Sphagnum molle) is also to be found.
