The approximately 1,130.9-hectare area, which was declared a nature reserve in 1983, extends over the municipalities of Mettingen and Westerkappeln, north of the town of Westerkappeln.
The reserve is part of the "Düsterdieker Niederung" EU bird sanctuary.
