Despite its name, the 'Blue Lake' in the Schwerte Forest just north of the Freischuetz restaurant is mostly green from algae and reflections of beech trees densely surrounding this remnant of a rock quarry that was in use for 30 years until 1873. The abandoned excavation has since filled with water and sediment. The rocks were mostly used in stabilizing the many small-scale coal mines that were dug here by early miners.
