    Hiking

The Church of Our Lady was built in 1220. During the 13th century, it was further expanded in the Scheldt Gothic style, a Romanesque style with Gothic elements. Later, the church was further embellished, and a robust tower with a spire was added. Damme's golden age was reflected in the church's scale, which gradually began to take on the allure of a cathedral. Yet, decline had already set in before the final expansion work was completed.

We arrived at the Church of Our Lady on Sunday just as the tower was opening to visitors. The climb up the tower is narrow and steep, and some of the wooden steps in the upper third creak quite a bit. However, you are rewarded with a magnificent view. You can see the towers of Bruges as well as the harbor of Zeebrugge and the stork nests in Damme. A wonderful stopover.

Visitors will find parking generally available within the town of Damme. It's advisable to look for designated parking areas in the immediate vicinity of the church or within a short walking distance in the town center. During peak season or busy weekends, arriving earlier in the day might help secure a spot more easily.

How can I reach the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption using public transport?

While Damme is a smaller town, it is accessible by public transport, often involving a bus connection from larger nearby cities like Bruges. Check local bus schedules for routes connecting to Damme. The church is centrally located and easily reachable on foot once you arrive in Damme.

Are there any permits or fees required to visit the church or climb its tower?

Visiting the interior of the church itself typically does not require a fee. However, there is usually a small entrance fee to climb the tower. This fee helps with the maintenance of the historical structure. It's always a good idea to check the official Visit Damme website for the most current information on opening hours and any applicable charges for tower access.

Is the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption suitable for a winter visit or outdoor activities?

While the tower climb is generally open from April to September, the church interior and the surrounding polder landscape are accessible year-round. Winter offers a different, often serene, atmosphere for walks or cycling, though conditions can be colder and potentially wet. Always check the weather forecast before planning outdoor activities in winter.

How crowded does the church or its tower get during peak season or weekends?

As a popular landmark, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, especially its tower, can attract a significant number of visitors during peak season (spring and summer) and on weekends. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting on a weekday morning or later in the afternoon. The climb up the tower can be narrow, so expect potential queues during busy times.

Is the church and its surrounding area family-friendly?

Yes, the area is very family-friendly. The town of Damme offers a charming environment for families to explore. While the tower climb might be challenging for very young children due to its steep and narrow steps, older children will likely enjoy the adventure and the panoramic views. The flat polder landscape around the church is excellent for family-friendly walks and cycling.

Are dogs allowed inside the church or on the tower climb, and are there dog-friendly trails nearby?

Generally, dogs are not permitted inside the church or on the tower climb, with the exception of service animals. However, the surrounding polder landscape and the Damme Canal offer numerous dog-friendly walking and cycling paths where your furry companion can join you.
