In 1802 a completely new type of kiln was created, the Rumford kiln as a temperature-controlled shaft kiln in which lime and coal were kept separate. Four Rumford kilns were built and operated by 1804, followed by a fifth kiln in 1835. These kilns operated 24 hours a day from spring to fall. Each kiln delivered 9 t of burnt lime per 12-hour shift.
In the second half of the 19th century, Berlin began to expand into a metropolis and the demand for quicklime increased rapidly. From 1871 the construction of a shaft furnace battery with initially five furnaces began. Five more kilns followed in 1874 and the Rumford kilns were shut down. In 1877 the shaft furnace system was complete with 18 furnaces.

I can't add anything to the other recommendations. Except: monumental, you just have to see it.

The shaft furnace battery is really very interesting.
When you are inside and imagine that all the ovens are in operation, it is hard to imagine what the working conditions were!
