The village was first mentioned in 874, it is said to have emerged from several manors. The Katz places probably belonged to the Sand district as early as 1297. Around 1350, Oberkatz was also counted as part of the Friedelshausen district and the Sand district.

Oberkatz was affected by witch hunts from 1617 to 1692: five women were involved in witch trials, two were executed and one was expelled from the country. The first victim was Barbara, Georg Öhmel's wife, in 1619.
