Construction of the hall church, initially dedicated to Saint Nicholas, began at the instigation of Würzburg Cathedral Provost Kilian von Bibra with the construction of the three-aisled nave in 1488. The choir, the width of the nave, was built in 1505. The square tower was completed around 1530. Justus Jonas the Elder, a friend of Martin Luther, was pastor from 1553 to 1555.

During the tour of the church, visitors can climb the church tower to the viewing gallery, which offers a good view of Eisfeld and the surrounding hills.
