The Benedictine monks used to live here - today the main entrance to the state academy for young musicians in Baden-Württemberg is located here.

The well-preserved Ochsenhausen monastery above the Rottum valley is one of the large baroque monastery complexes on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. It offers visitors a baroque experience of exceptional completeness. The Benedictine Imperial Abbey of Ochsenhausen, from which today's Ochsenhausen Monastery emerged, was founded at the end of the 11th century. The stately, monumental baroque façade of the new convent still bears witness to the spiritual and secular claim to power of the former imperial abbey. The core of the baroque monastery church still hides the late Gothic predecessor, but the redesign of the 18th century is festive and cheerful: the big names of baroque artists such as Dominikus Zimmermann, Johann Georg Bergmüller, Franz Joseph Spiegler and Ägid Verhelst are represented here in an exceptional density . It was said that the baroque was architecture made music. This is particularly true here in Ochsenhausen. Last but not least, the church is equipped with an organ by the famous Joseph Gabler. The historic observatory from the 18th century with the unique azimuth quadrant, an astronomical device for determining the position of the celestial bodies, is also extremely worth seeing. The observatory is well preserved and proves the importance of Ochsenhausen as a center of baroque sciences and arts

Ochsenhausen Monastery | Baroque monastery in Upper Swabia
        Excursions, Ochsenhausen

The monastery in Ochsenhausen is considered the flagship monastery of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, unfortunately you cannot visit it spontaneously.

The monastery houses a music school and a monastery museum, as well as a baroque library hall, similar to that in the Bad Schussenried monastery. There is also an observatory, a fruit box and the church, from the baroque period, on the grounds of the Ochsenhausen monastery. To see these sights in Upper Swabia, you have to make an appointment for a guided tour. Many things remain closed to spontaneous hikers – including this one on the cleaning day of the church. And this although the music school could provide access to parts of the site.
