It was around the year 1813 when the former lord of the castle, Hans Carl Leopold von der Gabelentz, gathered his friends and scholars around him one evening and Skat was invented in this cheerful gathering.

A moated castle was first mentioned at the current location of the castle in 1264. The then lord of the castle was Otto von Poschwitz. As early as 1388 the castle passed into the possession of the von der Gabelentz family. Unfortunately, the castle burned down to the foundations in 1507. It then took almost 75 years until Friedrich von der Gabelentz, a great-grandson of Albrecht, had today's palace built in the Renaissance style on the estate in Poschwitz. Over the years the castle has seen many generations of noble families come and go. The manor grew to an impressive size of over 172 hectares until the last owner, Hanns Conon von der Gabelentz, was expropriated in the course of a land reform in 1945, although he had previously set up a local history museum on parts of the property. After the war, the valuable linguistic library of Hans Conon von der Gabelentz (* 1807; † 1874) and the playing card collection were lost to the Soviet Union as "looted art".

In GDR times, the VEB Gartenbetrieb Poschwitz was housed in the castle. Due to dilapidation, many parts of the estate were gradually demolished. The neo-Gothic tower tower had to give way first. Stables and the entrance gate of the farmyard followed.

After the fall of the inner-German border, a private investor acquired the castle, which is now a listed building, but let it fall into disrepair. Since then, the city of Altenburg has been fighting with the Office for Monument Protection to preserve the property and most recently carried out emergency security measures on the roof of the castle in 2013.
