A treaty between the Kingdom of Saxony and the Duchy of Saxonia-Altenburg of 24.5.1874 enabled the construction of the station. For the construction of the station was associated with numerous outdoor work, such as the laying and lowering of the city brook "blue tide". Today's Altenburg train station is the second in the city. This was built in the style of the neo-renaissance. The city received its first train station in 1842, making it the first city in the Thuringian states to have a railway connection. However, the terminus soon became too small, so that it was replaced by today's station in 1878. Remnants of the old train station are still standing in Fabrikstrasse today.
