The Maria Magdalenen Church is the Evangelical Lutheran city church of Lauenburg. As early as 1227, the Maria Magdalenen Church was built as a chapel and rebuilt several times. The Gothic nave is made of field stone in the lower part of the building and brick above. This is the oldest visible part of the church building and dates from around 1300.

Next to the portal is a granite block that was used as a pillory in the early modern period. He stood at those people who had violated the church order of 1585. Punished offenses included adultery and blasphemy in the service.

The tower is much younger, and it was only in 1902 that it was built in the Gothic Revival style. In the Second World War, however, it was torn down after the English were hit by artillery and only replaced in its current form in 1993. As the former main entrance to the church, the south portal is particularly elaborately designed from Elbe sandstone with jewelry forms from the early Renaissance. The portal is crowned by Christ as ruler of the world. Under this fully plastic figure is the inscription:

"HIC EST DOMUS DEI ET PORTA COELI" (This is the house of God and the door of heaven, Genesis 28:17).

At the moment, the Maria Magdalenen Church is only open to visitors to the service or events. The entrance hall of the church is open during the opening times of the Elbe Shipping Museum. Through a glass door you can take a look into the nave.
