In the traditional smuggling history of Mallorca, the smugglers transported their goods over this pass to Inca in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Even though smuggling was an important economic factor on the island, soldiers were deployed to combat black trade.
In 1618, a unit of soldiers from Selva confronted 14 smugglers at this pass and engaged in a firefight with them. Those who finally surrendered were shot on the spot.
Since that day the pass has had this name: Coll des sa Bataia (or Batalla), Saddle of Battle.
