Even though smuggling was an important economic factor on the island, soldiers were deployed to combat black trade.
In 1618, a unit of soldiers from Selva confronted 14 smugglers at this pass and engaged in a firefight with them. Those who finally surrendered were shot on the spot.
Since that day the pass has had this name: Coll des sa Bataia (or Batalla), Saddle of Battle.
