The lake originated from the flooding of the remainder of the Meuro mine.It is located south of the city Großräschen and west of the Senftenberg district Sedlitz and can be reached via the A 13 (Dresden-Berlin) and the federal highway 96 or via the station of the municipality Sedlitz.
The lake, which began flooding on March 15, 2007 and is expected to close in 2018, is one of the larger in the region. For tourist development, a harbor basin and a pier were created in Großräschen, north of Sedlitz a jetty with harbor and accommodation establishments is to be built.

From Freienhufen coming you drive slightly downhill to the newly created residential area. Even before the roundabout, a cycle path branches off to the left down to the lake. This leads up to the IBA terraces with pier and city harbor.
