Lünen is a cozy town on the edge of the Ruhrgebiet. It is characterized by the lip that flows once across the city. South of the river and around the St. Georg Church is the small old town, in which even some old half-timbered houses are.

Lünen is the largest city in the district of Unna in western Westphalia in the district of Arnsberg. Lünen belongs to the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe and the Regionalverband Ruhr. The formerly district-free city is today a middle center, which is characterized by its situation at the northeast edge of the Ruhr district and at the southern edge of the Münsterland of both industrial and rural influence. Lünen belonged to the medieval Hanseatic League as a so-called Beistadt and today is a member of the Hanseatic League of modern times.
