The Unterrotliegend is defined by "mixed" layers, i. H. the layers (or formations) alternate with gray, red or volcanic deposits, and originated about 280 million years ago.
The "moonstones" get their name from the silicification, ie silicon dioxide columns in the quartzite rock.
Another well-known rock of this type is the "marble stone" in the Taunus.
