In 1462, Count Gerd zu Oldenburg had the Neuchâtel Castle built as a stronghold against the East Frisians. Towards the end of the 16th century, the complex was converted into a residential palace. Today there is an ornithological museum, the Ev. Lutheran palace chapel, a wedding hall and a kindergarten for the community of Zetel is housed there.
