As early as 1851, the cadet institute began buying land behind Bensberg Castle. This also included the area of the cadet pond, because the bathing pond near the castle, acquired in 1844, had to be given up for the construction of several buildings. In the 19th century, the cadet pond with its water, which was certainly quite cold in summer, was used for training purposes by the cadets.
