From 1816, the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß from Göttingen was commissioned to measure the degrees and measure the Kingdom of Hanover. He developed the methods of geodesy, invented the heliotrope to improve measurements and published work on map projection. During his field work, he set fixed points in the coordinate system he had developed for eastern Hanover, Hohenhorn, Hamburg and Wilsede. The cast-iron measuring point can still be seen on the Hohenhorn church tower. Carl Friedrich Gauß adorns the former 10 DM bill on the front, on the back here is his coordinate system with the place name "Hohenhorn".Source and image from the coordinate system:amt-hohe-elbgeest.de/media/custom/1831_1667_1.PDF?1383304324
