At the beginning of the 19th century, a steelworks with a blast furnace was built near Zirkenreuth, in the so-called "Sauerwinkel Valley", by royal decree. The location was chosen because of the abundance of forests and the nearby iron ore deposits. The town of Königshütte gradually developed. A mining and steelworks office was also based there. It was responsible for all mining in the Stiftland. In order to be able to better process the relatively low-quality iron ore mined near Pfaffenreuth into steel and cast iron, pig iron from other areas was melted down.
