The veneration of Mary has a tradition of more than 500 years in Marpingen. The oldest surviving evidence of the special veneration of the Mother of God is the altarpiece in the parish church “Maria Himmelfahrt” in Marpingen, which is dated to the period 1420 to 1440. It shows the grieving Mother of God with the body of Jesus Christ taken from the cross.
