  • Belonging to the system of numerous protected areas present in Abruzzo, considered for this reason the Green Region of Europe, the Majella National Park is characterized by the high mountainousness of its territory, which is found for 55% at altitudes above 2000 metres. The wide morphological and altitudinal variety of its area, together with the harsh but variable climate, influenced by the mitigating action of the sea (only 30 km away as the crow flies), have contributed to creating a great differentiation of habitats for numerous species living creatures, which make it a unique protected area, a veritable treasure trove of the most valuable and rare Italian biodiversity. Vast areas within it present typical aspects of wild nature, with a rich national heritage of flora and fauna biodiversity: the Park hosts , in fact, over 78% of the mammal species (except Cetaceans) present in Abruzzo, and over 45% of the Italian ones; more than 1800 plant species recorded - about a third of the entire Italian flora - with Mediterranean, Alpine, Balkan, Pontic, Illyrian, Pyrenean and Arctic elements.
