The monastery's origins date back to 645. The Vikings burned it down in 841. Over time, however, it became one of the most influential monasteries in France. Until the French Revolution brought an end to this power and also to the monastery itself.

Mainly remains of the two impressive churches have been preserved. But the gatehouse, the new apartment and the bakery are also still in the extensive park.

Interesting monastery ruins - once one of the largest and most powerful monasteries in France. The last monks were expelled during the French Revolution.

The white, octagonal, 50 meter high towers of the abbey can be seen from afar.

Today the abbey is a huge, impressive ruin, Victor Hugo called it the most beautiful ruin in France.

During the French Revolution in 1789, the Benedictine monks were expelled and converted the building henceforth as a quarry.
