The Porta Leoni was built in the 1st century BC along with the first city walls and later upgraded several times. The Via Cappello formed the cardo maximus in the Roman city layout and divided the city into 4 even squares with the Corso Porta Borsai and Corso Sant'Anastasia as decumanus maximus. Parts of the defensive wall around the Porta Leoni are still visible all around the residential buildings - they are considered the most important surviving structures of antiquity in Verona.
