The term "Swedish Redoubt" originated in connection with fighting during the Thirty Years' War, when the population used older ramparts or fortifications as refuges or defensive structures in Catholic areas to seek safety from the Protestant troop contingents of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. The term is often used figuratively, but then incorrectly, for example, also for ramparts where no fighting with Swedish troops took place.
