Between 1921 and 1927, at the initiative of the French Touring Club and its Belgian counterpart, 118 monuments were erected (96 in France and 22 in Belgium) in important places of the First World War. They indicate the farthest point reached by the Germans on July 18 during the spring offensive of 1918. These 1.25-meter high demarcation stones carved in pink granite were designed by Parisian sculptor Paul Moreau-Vauthier. In Belgium there are three different versions (French, British and Belgian), mainly distinguished by the helmet of the fighters. Historically, they have often been misplaced. They are marked with a special symbol on older Michelin maps.
