The beef has no incisors in the upper jaw, but a chewing plate. When grazing, tufts of grass are torn off with the rough tongue and swallowed almost unchewed. If the rumen is full, the animal lies down and has to deal with chewing for several hours. With the help of bacteria, the feed is broken down and further digested.
