The three-aisled Protestant Basilica of St. Mary in Wilhelmshausen was built around 1145 and was the church of the Wahlshausen monastery. In 1293, this was converted into a Cistercian monastery, which belonged to the Hardehausen monastery (now in the Höxter district).

In 1554, following the Reformation, Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse took over the property, settled farmers and thus founded the village of Wilhelmshausen in 1572.

The church has undergone various changes over time, but today shows its Romanesque appearance again.

The classic three-apse choir with the human heads on the frieze is particularly beautiful. The octagonal baptismal font with mythical creatures is also remarkable.

From the hiking trail on the Weser you can already see the romantic Marienbasilika: The beautiful stone building is framed by trees on the edge of the village and is waiting for you to visit. And it's worth it too.

Wilhelmshausen goes back to the Wahlshausen monastery, founded in 1140, from which the Marienbasilika still survives. With the advent of the Reformation, the monastery was abolished by the County of Hesse in 1526. Wilhelm IV systematically laid out Wilhelmshausen, named after him, on the former monastery grounds and had new settlers move into the old convent buildings.
