    1) During the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) this area on both sides of the Fulda was a theater of war. The Battle of Lutterberg on June 27, 1762 was the last major fighting in northern Hesse.
Saxon and French troops had entrenched themselves near Lutterberg. On the eve of the battle, Hessian and Hanoverian units gathered on this side of the Fulda. They planned a surprise attack that began at 3 a.m. Hessian and Hanoverian guns fired across the Fulda at the enemy positions.
Meanwhile, the soldiers crossed the river at several fords. At Wahnhausen, Spiegelmühle, Wilhelmshausen and Bonaforth they ran through the river to the Gürtel. The attempt to bring their own guns to the opposite bank failed. In addition, the Saxon and French troops had been warned by defectors.
Nevertheless, the Hessian and Hanoverian troops were able to win the battle by midday.

      2) A total of 2,500 soldiers lost their lives. As a result, the French gave up Göttingen and Hannoversch Münden. Kassel remained under French occupation. There they surrendered after a siege on November 3, 1762. The Peace of Hubertusburg in the following February finally ended the war after 7 years.
