The Merklinger Ried is almost surrounded by the Heckengäu-Weil der Stadt landscape conservation area. Habitat for wild plants and animals, especially for numerous bird species. A floristic speciality is the marsh helleborine orchid species, which is classified as "endangered" in Baden-Württemberg. Numerous bird species occur: reed warbler, marsh warbler, reed bunting, grasshopper warbler, blackcap, chiffchaff, spotted crake and common snipe.
