Viticulture was stopped when phylloxera came to Europe and Germany. Other wine-growing areas reacted with refinement concepts (e.g. grafting usable to wild wine, etc.), in Gelnhausen the Nikolay brewery from Hanau had also started to brew beer in Gelnhausen. Beer was new in Gelnhausen and cheaper. So the winemakers decided to plant fruit trees on the vineyards. Even today one is only a real "Gelnhauser" if one has a "Abbelstück".

Ever since the city was founded, viticulture has been closely linked to Gelnhausen, as records from the Meerholz and Selbold monasteries show.
The favorable topographical location and the optimal sun orientation of the mountain slope above the city certainly contributed to this.
The vineyards stretched far from west to east above the city, individual sites could reach sizes of up to 7 acres.
Since wine, because of the much greater hygienic safety compared to water, was widespread among the population, it also represented an important economic factor. This is documented, among other things, by the vineyard regulations of 1560.
